This was a surprise! I wasn't expecting to like this. In fact, at the very beginning I was rolling my eyes thinking, "here we go again the abused foster girl reverse harem trope". BUT! They are making it work here, it actually makes some sense.
The romance is slow burn. It's sort of fun to try and guess who will be part of the harem and who will be friend-zoned. The story is full of little mysteries like this. Like, who is she? What is Nick? Who's really behind all that's h ...more
Nora's life has been anything but charmed, in fact, she feels as if she is cursed. At age 6 she lost her mother in a brutal vampire attack; placed in the foster system she has been used and abused since she was 7. Now as an adult she lives alone in a bad Detroit neighborhood. It's a lonely existence since she tries to attract as little attention as possible. She has a few unusual 'gifts' that make it hard for her to be around other people. She picks up someone's inner thoughts with any touching ...more
This book could have been it. It could have been my favorite book of the year but it just wasn't quite there.
Don't get me wrong, there were some really cool elements to it. I mean, who writes about trolls these days? And not evil trolls but really cool trolls with big personalities.

Please rush me into the next book, because I really really really need to find out what the supernatural world has next for Nora.
This book was good--not over the top amazing, like I'd originally thought in the first few chapters--but still a very enjoyable read. It had me laughing out loud at some of Nora's wit and dry humor, which are two things I love about our main character. [WARNING! Possible spoilers ahead, so don't read if you don't wanna know. Come back to me after you read it.]

When I first started, I wasn't really into it. I felt the author was going down a tricky path. Also, it was kinda sad. I sorta just sat there depressed while reading.
Like gotdamn Nora, check your status. Maybe you're dead and in hell. May took a cliche and put a dark twist on it. As the book continued the flow picked up. Nora's PTSD is focused on without consuming the plot. People are more than their trauma, but it's still a part of them.
Anyway, Nora is an alright character. She lives life day ...more
