This book had an imaginative concept. There is sweet, innocent love. Magic. Evil. Funny old lady. Traitor. It has all the necessary characters. It’s almost a mix of a fairy tale and a Lloyd Alexander novel.
Nara grows up with an adoptive father and her best friend in a poor small village. She knows she holds some type of special magic that she doesn’t understand. She is a tender hearted girl who only wants to help. In a decision to try to help the village, she sets into motion more than she ever ...more
I really enjoyed this book, the world that it's set in is well constructed and the descriptions are well done. The characters are a highlight of the book, they're beautifully done and so varied.
There weren't really any plot twists from the perspective of the reader although there was a lot that the main characters weren't expecting. The plot is fairly simple but not overly so.

I loved this one. It moves pretty fast and has a lot of adventure type stuff going on.

4.5 stars. Excellent kickoff for a fantasy series. Great world-building and characters. The storyline felt similar to other books in the genre, but it is also fresh. I really enjoyed this.
I received an electronic review copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Was unexpectedly thrilled by the quality of this book! Amazing settings, characters, feelings, and the ups and downs got me dizzy--in a good way! One thing I found particularly enthralling was the change in point of view from chapter to chapter, it definitely kept things interesting. Would definitely recommend to a friend!
The author wrote great imagery and the world felt real, as if I was in it. The plot development was very smooth. I really enjoyed the pace of this book, which held my interest. I was extremely hooked on Nara and Kayna's story. The contrast between Nara and Kayna is striking, considering that they are twins. Nara takes life for granted while Kanya finds joy in taking lives. The concept of the "broken" ones having special gifts is an interesting twist that I enjoyed, sort of the opposite of real l ...more
