Queen Elfrieda Veronika Ingrid Lenore (E.V.I.L.) is the best friend Grump always wanted, feeding him all the rubies he can eat and allowing him to rule at her side in exchange for magic and information. But as time goes on, Grump starts to suspect that Queen E.V.I.L. may not be as nice as she seems. . . . When the queen commands him to carry out a horrible task against her stepdaughter Snow White, Grump is in over his head. He's bound by magic to help the queen, but also to protect Snow White. I didn't like this one as much as Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin,Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk or Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood but it still was cute. Snow white got on my nerves though.

Once again, Liesl Shurtliff takes a familiar fair tale and puts a whole new spin on it! In this book, we hear the tale from Grump’s (also known as Borlen) point of view. I think kids are going to be lined up for this one just as they have been for the others.

Thank you to NetGalley for the digital review copy. All opinions are my own.

Liesl Shurtliff is the master at taking a well known fairy tale and giving you a completely different perspective. In this book, she takes the beloved Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and gives us an alternate story that could have been, since us humans often change the details of the stories and leave out the most important parts.

The dwarfs are an interesting crew that could use a little explaining. According to Germani

Everyone knows the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, right? Wrong! The true story doesn't really start with Snow White, it starts with a dwarf named Borlen (nicknamed Grump) who dreams of visiting the forbidden Surface. You see dwarves lives wayyyy underground, where they mine for delicious gems, live to be very old, and never ever go above ground...because The Surface is home to the feared greedy humans. But the call of The Surface is too strong for young Borlen, who ventures above and ...more

I have read all of Shurtliff’s other fairy retellings and always enjoy the blend of humor and thoughtfulness Shurtliff brings to her fairy tale retellings. This was a very fun fairy tale retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I ended up enjoying this a lot.

The whole story is told from "Grumpy's" POV. It focuses around where he grew up, why he ended up on the surface, and how he ended up entangled with Snow White.

The story is at turns creative, touching, and funny. I loved the world the dw

Having already read and loved Rump and Red by the Liesl Shurtliff, I was really looking forward to Grump and was not at all disappointed! Shurtliff has found a particular niche in the fairytale world that bridges a gap between picture books and full-on fantasy genre. Grump is perfect for intermediate and advanced primary readers (and adults too). Just like Rump, Jack and Red, it's an ideal read aloud to hook students' into the series. The humor is delightful and the characters are engaging. You ...more

The story behind the seventh dwarf involved with Snow White. Told from Grump's perspective. The true story is certainly different from the one we humans tell.

Grump is unhappy underground and finds a way to get to the Surface. He's discovered by the Queen and through magic has to obey her commands. Then Snow White also pulls his beard and he's torn between these two. All's well in the end though the story is rather different than we've been told.

Magic, mayhem and a lot of adventures for middle gr

Grump is a fractured fairy tale told from one of Snow White’s dwarfs POV. Readers of all ages will not only fall in love with, but relate to Grump. He is different from other dwarfs, but doesn’t let that hold him back. Make sure to add this to your preorder list!
