GR Ultimate Summer Reading Challenge: Diversify Yourself.
I was a bit vary when I read the synopsis. Regardless I still wanted to give it a shot. Unfortunately it wasn't for me.
The writing style was a bit clunky and just all over the place. I didn't enjoy reading about Lulu and her friends. I was more interested in her mother.
Overall I didn't really enjoy it. I still recommend.
Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for the E-ARC copy of this novel.
Wow. I really enjoyed this novel. Lulu makes this story so wonderful and realistic. Her character is emotional and funny. The relationships in this novel are well written and very realistic. Lulu and her girlfriends are witty, intelligent, and fiercely intense characters. I loved this novel and think that it is one of the best books I have read in the last year. I feel like this is a great novel for young women. It is impo ...more

I loooove messy books. as in characters who aren't perfect and mess up and kiss whoever the frick they want. and that's why i kinda love Lulu because she is so unapologetic. she struggles. she likes the wrong guys. she's brave. she's outgoing. she makes mistakes. she messes up. she is such a realistic characte ...more
This is an incredible coming-of-age story about Lulu and her best friends who don’t seem like they even like each other, and I kept wondering why on earth they were friends, until their friendship goes through some serious ordeals and they have a stronger friendship in the end.
Lulu is such a fun character to read about. She is so cutthroat, to the point where she pushes a guy into a pool when he didn’t really do anything to deserve that, and she messes with people and purposely insults ...more
This novel is perfection. It’s first and foremost a character study—of the irrepressible, whip-smart, self-possessed, utterly unforgettable Lulu Saad, who’s unafraid to chase her crushes and spar with her contentious, close-knit group of friends. Lulu’s Arab-American and Muslim, and the story delves with painful and hopeful detail into the difficulty of finding yourself and your place in two cultures. Meanwhile Lulu fights with her friends, contends with messy hookups and finds herself drawn to ...more
Darling, Lulu. I didn't know you'd get to breath fresh air and take up shelf space when I wrote you. I got you wrong so often in that first draft. But I kept plugging away and you took on shape and you took on life and here you are out in the world. I'm so proud of how messy and vulnerable and angry and hopeful you are. I let you do your worst, and in turn, you showed me your best. Your growth and determination. Your love and your humor.
Anyways, this is me being a sap and telling you my first n ...more

Lately, Lulu has been screwing everything up. Her three best friends are all pulling apart at the seams, an almost accidental drowning at a party has her grounded for life (or at least the remainder of Ramadan), and she finally snaps at one of the aunties for saying something that—as it turns out—she didn’t even say. So, yeah, Lulu’s life is a bit complicated. But she’s determined to set things right, because as painful as it is to admit you’re wrong—or that you’ve been wronged—there are some th ...more
