I Can Only Imagine: A Memoir Reviews
There’s just something about Bart Millard’s story that touches my heart. His life is the embodiment of God’s love and grace and blessing. He tells of a redemption story that is so emotional because the work of Jesus is emotional! Once he begins a good work in you, you will never be the same. I love that. Jesus loves us so much that he died to save us and gave us a way to be close with the Father.
Bart’s story is a must read.
His writing is conversational and gets right to the truth of his past.
Wow what a story of God’s grace and love. I cried, I rejoiced, I felt God speaking. I loved the story of Bart’s life and how open he was. The abuse part just broke my heart. I have three children that we adopted from foster care that dealt with abuse. So this hits close to home. But God is awesome. He transformed Bart’s dad and He can transform you if you let him. God is still writing our story. As I read this I just kept thinking BUT GOD....
I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappoi ...more
"My dad was a monster, and I saw God transform him" - This was an amazing story about Bart Millard (MercyMe) and his father. Most certainly a redemption and healing that only God could orchestrate.
This is the story behind the song "I Can Only Imagine" but I also love MercyMe's recent song "Even If" which is discussed in the book too. So powerful to know the story behind the author of these words:
"You've been faithful, You've been good
All of my days
Jesus, I will cling to You
Come what may

READ THIS BOOK!
I Can Only Imagine is such an inspirational book. I couldn't seem to put it down. Their is such love, understanding, forgiveness, grace and mercy (plus all the abuse, self doubt, pain and suffering) in the story, you can't help but see God at work in every page. I can not recommend this book enough. Whether you know Bart Millard is the lead singer of MercyMe or have never heard of him, this book will bless you and stay with you for a long time!
As I watched interviews with the author, and read a synopsis of his story prior to reading the book, I was not sure that this would be more than a behind-the-scenes look at the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) industry. Wow, I was certainly wrong.
The author rips off the scars of his youth and gives a heart-wrenching history of what he endured as the child at the hands of an abusive father, other experiences that shaped the man that he came to be, and his eventual path to follow Jesus Christ.
I loved listening to this audio book. The movie was amazing but getting to hear "rest of the story" was even better! Plus it's always a bonus to me when the author reads it himself.
Bart Millard, the lead vocal of MercyMe, opens up in an intimate revealing of life in an abusive home. He’s honest about his thoughts and feelings from then, how he would have been relieved if his father had passed away. How music and creative play were his escapes. Some might ask, “Did Got allow for Bart to be abused so he’d end up starting MercyMe?” I believe God can uses unfortunate circumstances for good.
“He never drank or did drugs. He didn’t need any help to fuel the rage.”
