This book came along at just the right time when I needed to take a break from all the negative news on social media. There are some excellent, practical solutions to help you limit, or break away from, your device, and I fully intend to use the challenges to help make some regular habits.
I did not like this book. The premise is that we can be more creative if we stop turning to social media when we are bored. The book was simplistic, poorly researched, and included no reference section, Even worse, the author, a "podcaster", reported her online project as if it was an experiment which it clearly is not. I thought this book struck a nice balance between factual evidence from experts of how screen time/phone time is limiting our creativity and the author’s findings as her podcast team launched a Bored and Brilliant challenge nationwide with all sorts of ordinary people participating.

Having listened to the Note to Self podcast semi-regularly for a while and having previously participated in the Bored and Brilliant challenge myself, I knew the basics of this book going in. This book is brilliant and not at all boring! I've been so concerned about the role of technology in my life for a few years now. I was a fantastic, attentive student in middle school and then I got my first laptop. Since then it's been a slow process of losing my attention span. I also certainly blame addictive behavior to my phone and computer as compounding the effects of my depression before it was diagnosed.

I actually finished this book a few days ago because I hadn't yet completed the last task, but the library wants it back, so!
I forget what made me put this on hold at the library. But as someone who used to be a non-stop daydreamer and is now a constant phone-gazer, the idea was inherently sort of interesting to me: that keeping our brains busy with tech at every waking hour decreases our ability to think creatively, problem-solve, and generally function.

Some good reminders in here about the importance of walking around without having the phone in our hand and what we lose when we are trying to squeeze too much "productive" activities into every minute of our days. I am going to try the different challenges to see how I feel and try to counteract the drained overtaxed feeling I have sometimes.
