A Call to Vengeance (Honorverse: Manticore Ascendant #3) Reviews
Pretty good third volume in this prequel series, but a slight disappointment on technical grounds - it was announced more than a year ago, so there was some initial confusion about whether it would come out in 2017 or 2018. But despite the long lead time the proof reading wasn't as good as it should have been. Example: Travis's (possessive) is underlined throughout the book, for no reason I could see. There were a few continuity glitches as well. And there was no Author's note, as in the first t ...more
Third and last in the Manticore Ascendant science fiction military soap opera series, a prequel in the Honorverse, revolving around the kingdom of Manticore, as we follow the career of Lieutenant Travis Uriah Long, and introducing us to the start of Elizabeth II’s reign in 1544 PD.
Underhanded greed is what it’s all about. On both sides. What can I say, politics are involved. It does help that Weber/Zahn use third person omniscient point-of-view, and we know the thoughts and feelings of a ...more
Very good read, in a very good series
Manticore is under attack. In the previous book, Manticore was attacked by mercenary forces, who were in an exciting battle, defeated. But at great cost to the Manticore Navy. Travis Long is now a Lieutenant in the RMN, and played an important role, as tactical officer, in defeating the mercenaries.
Now another group of bad guys, try to enter Manticore's space but withdraw rather than face what looks like a significant Manticoran defense force. In response Manticore sends out two ships to pursue ...more
Book 3 in the Manticore Ascendant series. Following an attack on the planet which killed the crown prince. Manticore must regroup and decide whether to concentrate on rebuilding the Navy or expanding the Patrol and Rescue Service (think Coast Guard in space) both of which performed admirably during the recent attack. While the two factions fight this out in Parliment, another crisis hits the royal family that affects the succession. Travis Long and Lisa Donnelly (both naval officers) who were im ...more
Nicely crafted. The ongoing characters remain engaging. Some of the loose ends of the series get tied up, but there is clear opening for a fourth book in the series. I can only hope the lag between books 2 and 3 is not representative of what we can expect this time around!
It is not needful for one to have read the Honor Harrington series, set many years later in this universe, to enjoy this series, but reading the two before this within the small subset of Manticore Ascendant would be very usefu ...more
I had hopes that this would be a quick series to read in between Weber's main storylines, but the authors seem bent on another long series.
It's some six months after the events of the last book. The Royal Manticoran Navy is reeling from the aftermath of the attack on the home system. The Legislature is tied up between factions who want to shore up the Navy, and those who want to gut the service in favor of an upgraded police force.
Meanwhile the Navy and its allies are bent on discovering who att ...more
Weber delivers again. The tale conveying the birth of Manticore and the Manticore Navy is entertaining and engrossing. Who was the genius before Harrington? The politics of Manticore remain the same, but new allies (both official and unofficial) and new threats. Great read.
